As a network engineer, you'll have responsibility for setting up, developing and maintaining computer networks within an organisation or between organisations. You'll offer support to users, who can be staff, clients, customers and suppliers, and troubleshoot any problems that arise. This may, in some cases, involve designing new networks.

Your aim is to ensure the integrity of high availability network infrastructure to provide maximum performance for your users.

You may work internally as part of an organisation's IT support team, or externally as part of an outsourced IT networking consultancy firm working with a number of clients.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Handle Level-2 network support for LAN, WAN, WLAN, and Data Center networks
• Troubleshoot network outages, latency, packet loss, and connectivity issues
• Work on routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless devices
• Perform incident management, problem management, and RCA
• Escalate unresolved issues to L3 / OEM TAC with proper logs and analysis
• Configure and troubleshoot:
• VLANs, Trunking
• STP / RSTP / MSTP
• LACP / Port-channel / Bagg
• Static & Dynamic routing (OSPF, BGP basics)
• Monitor network health using tools like:
• OpManager, SolarWinds, PRTG, Nagios
• Support firewalls & security policies (basic level)
• Assist in network changes, upgrades, and maintenance
• Maintain network documentation and SOPs
• Coordinate with ISPs, vendors, and internal teams
• Ensure SLA compliance
• Technical Skills Required
• Strong understanding of OSI & TCP/IP models
• Switching & Routing fundamentals
• Hands-on with:
• Cisco / HPE / Aruba / Fortinet (any)
• WAN technologies:
• MPLS, Internet Leased Line, VPN
• Firewall basics:
• Policies, NAT, VPN (IPSec basics)
• Wireless fundamentals
• SNMP, Syslog, NetFlow basics
• Linux/CLI troubleshooting exposure (preferred)
• Tools & Platforms (Good to Have)
• Network Monitoring Tools (OpManager preferred)
• ITSM tools (ServiceNow, SDP Plus)
• FortiGate / Cisco
• Certifications (Preferred)
• CCNA / CCNP (or equivalent)
• Fortinet NSE 4
• Aruba / HPE switching certifications
• Soft Skills
• Good communication skills
