About the Role

We're seeking a Lead Frontend Engineer to architect, scale, and lead the development of high-performance SaaS interfaces powering AI-assisted assessment, analytics, and career-readiness workflows.

You will own the frontend architecture and technical direction while leading a team of frontend engineers. You'll build complex, resilient web applications using React, Next.js, and TypeScript—designing multi-step product flows, real-time AI interactions, dashboards, and institutional tools used daily by students and educators.

This role requires strong product thinking, deep frontend architecture experience, proven team leadership, and comfort working across asynchronous workflows including video, audio, and text-based interactions.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Architecture

• Lead and mentor a team of frontend engineers through code reviews, pairing, and technical guidance.
• Own frontend architecture decisions and establish coding standards, best practices, and design patterns.
• Drive technical roadmap and prioritization for frontend initiatives.
• Coordinate with product, design, and backend leads on cross-functional planning.
• Run sprint planning, standups, or technical syncs for the frontend team.

Technical Delivery

• Architect and develop scalable frontend systems using React.js, Next.js (App Router), and TypeScript, leveraging SSR, streaming, caching, and advanced code-splitting techniques.
• Design and implement complex multi-step product workflows including assessment creation, evaluation pipelines, draft/publish flows, dashboards, and bulk operations.
• Build role-based interfaces across student, faculty, and admin personas with secure routing and fine-grained access control.
• Implement asynchronous UX patterns including long-running job flows, status tracking, retries, progress indicators, polling/WebSockets, and robust error recovery.
• Develop interfaces for AI-assisted experiences including video, audio, and text-based interactions, with real-time feedback and media handling where applicable.
• Architect state management using tools such as TanStack React Query (server-state orchestration) and Zustand (client-side workflow state).
• Build scalable UI systems using ShadCN, Radix UI, or Headless UI with strong component abstraction and design consistency.
• Create analytics dashboards with tables, filters, visualizations, and high-volume rendering (including virtualization where necessary).
• Optimize frontend performance using caching strategies, hydration control, streaming patterns, and Core Web Vitals best practices.
• Collaborate closely with backend and ML teams to shape API contracts, async processing flows, and AI inference UX.
• Instrument product analytics and telemetry (e.g., PostHog, Amplitude) to measure and improve user workflows.
• Maintain test coverage using Playwright, Cypress, and Jest within CI/CD pipelines.

Must-Have Skills

• Deep expertise in React and TypeScript, with experience delivering large-scale SaaS applications.
• Strong understanding of Next.js App Router architecture, including server/client component boundaries, streaming, caching strategies, and hydration behavior.
• Proven experience building complex, data-heavy product workflows, not just marketing sites or simple dashboards.
• Experience with advanced state management using TanStack React Query and lightweight global state solutions (e.g., Zustand).
• Strong grasp of asynchronous UI patterns including retries, optimistic updates, polling, and real-time data handling.
• Experience building role-based, multi-tenant SaaS systems with secure routing and permission-aware UI logic.
• Solid understanding of frontend performance profiling (Lighthouse, Chrome DevTools) and Core Web Vitals.
• Familiarity with frontend security best practices (CSP, CORS, XSS prevention).
• Proven experience leading or mentoring a team of 3+ engineers.
• Strong communication skills for stakeholder alignment and technical advocacy.
• Experience driving architectural decisions and getting buy-in across teams.
• Track record of shipping complex projects end-to-end with a team.

Bonus Points

• Experience building interfaces for AI/LLM-powered applications, including real-time inference or multimodal inputs (video, audio, text).
• Experience with real-time technologies such as WebSockets or SSE.
• Experience building media-heavy interfaces (recording, streaming, upload flows).
• Strong product and design collaboration skills with attention to UX clarity in complex workflows.
• Experience contributing to frontend architecture decisions in growing teams.
• Experience scaling a frontend team or establishing frontend practices at an early-stage startup.
