Job Description

We are seeking an Associate – Lighting & Electrical to join our UK Local Government team in GCC. This is a senior role responsible for providing technical excellence, project oversight, client leadership, and strategic growth of our lighting and environmental capabilities.

The role will play a key part in delivering high-quality lighting and electrical design solutions across major UK and international infrastructure projects, while supporting our Environmental, Sustainability, and Net-Zero objectives. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, mentor engineers, and work closely with clients, planners, and environmental specialists to deliver compliant, innovative, and low‑carbon lighting solutions.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Design
  • Provide technical leadership in the delivery of lighting and electrical design projects across:
  • Highways and motorways
  • Transport and infrastructure schemes
  • Urban realm and city beautification
  • Residential developments
  • Industrial facilities
  • Sports facilities, car parks, amenity and public realm areas
  • Lead and review lighting designs using industry-standard software such as Lighting Reality, DIALux, Relux, or equivalent.
  • Ensure all lighting and electrical designs comply with:
  • ILP guidance (including PLG04, GN01, GN08, etc.)
  • UK standards and regulations
  • Client specifications and best practice
  • Oversee design quality assurance, ensuring drawings, calculations, and reports meet required standards.

  • Environmental & Net-Zero Capability
  • Lead and support the delivery of:
  • Obtrusive light assessments
  • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA)
  • Lighting Impact Assessments (LIA)
  • Contribute to the development of Net-Zero and low‑carbon lighting strategies, including:
  • Energy-efficient lighting solutions
  • Circular Economy principles
  • Reduction of embodied and operational carbon
  • Work collaboratively with ecology, planning, sustainability, and architectural lighting teams to deliver integrated environmental solutions.

  • Project & Client Management
  • Act as technical lead or project director on major projects, supporting Project Managers in:
  • Defining project scope, deliverables, and programmes
  • Managing risks, opportunities, and technical challenges
  • Lead client engagement, providing trusted technical advice and representing the business in meetings and workshops.
  • Review client briefs and develop technical inputs for bids, tenders, and fee proposals.
  • Ensure projects are delivered:
  • On time and within agreed budgets
  • In line with quality, safety, and sustainability standards

  • People & Team Leadership
  • Line manage and mentor Principal engineers, senior engineers, engineers, and graduates, supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Develop and grow the team’s Street lighting and electrical expertise.
  • Coordinate work across multidisciplinary teams and manage interfaces with CAD technicians and external consultants.
  • Support workload planning and resource management across multiple projects.

  • Business Development & Strategy
  • Support the growth of the UK Lighting & Electrical capability.
  • Contribute to:
  • Market strategy
  • Innovation in lighting technologies and digital design
  • Development of best practice guidance and standard methodologies
  • Promote the company’s commitment to sustainability, ESG, and Net-Zero delivery.

  • Qualifications

    Qualifications & Experience

    Essential
  • BEng / BSc (Hons) in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or related discipline (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • 12+ years of relevant experience in lighting and electrical design within a consultancy or similar environment
  • Strong experience delivering UK infrastructure and environmental lighting projects
  • In-depth knowledge of:
  • ILP guidance and UK lighting standards
  • Environmental and obtrusive light assessment methodologies
  • Proven experience in leading teams and managing complex projects

  • Desirable
  • Chartered or working towards CEng / IEng (IET, CIBSE or equivalent)
  • Membership of the Institution of Lighting Professionals (ILP)
  • Experience contributing to EIA chapters and planning support documentation
  • Strong understanding of Net-Zero, sustainability, and carbon reduction strategies
